About The Hunter
I wanted to practice my character design skills and came up with a brief to make a mysterious, fantasy character with a contemporary vibe that would avoid generic fantasy tropes.
I took a lot of inspiration from high fashion and elements from nature. My sketches evolved into a range of characters, and giving each a name helped clarify the concept of each design.
I decided on developing The Hunter which had the mysterious yet modern aesthetic I was after. The use of natural materials, like leather and feathers helped capture the agility of a hunter. I incorporated the idea of how a Magpie is attracted to shiny things and decided to add a few small, shiny trinkets which the character could collect or use as spells, power-ups or healing items. The wing-like cape design helps bring the character together into a strong silhouette.
I cleaned up the line art and started blocking out the main colours and materials. I wanted to practice my hand-rendering skills so I avoided using textures as much as possible. The only texture I used was to add a slight variation to the feathered bolero - which I made my own custom brushes for.
