Option 1: New design layout with focus on player character, and simplified design of teammate information.
Option 2: Based on the current in-game wireframe layout with modernised design and stronger use of Helldivers brand elements.
Deconstruction: There were many factors in the current design that needed addressing in order to add a more modern and professional look and feel.
Brand Elements: I wanted to utilise the Helldivers graphic elements to add a stronger brand essence to the new design.
Wireframes: Initial wireframe designs ranging from updating the current layout to more player-focused designs with a more dynamic look and feel.
Ideation: Initial ideas were roughed out on paper and then created in Adobe Illustrator. I split the various elements (Perks, Weapons, Stratagems etc.) into separate tasks. I re-designed all graphic elements to be clearer and more coherent whilst keeping everything modern.
Ideation: I wanted to incorporate the D-pad code function into the design of the Stratagems. I looked into adding directional arrows and dot-dash elements but ultimately decided on using the hexagonal form of the ‘Pods’ as a device to frame the Stratagems.
About Helldivers
A complete re-design of the Helldivers Loadout screen helping to enhance the game's branding and add a more impactful and modern user experience. I developed two main options: one based on the game's current wireframe design, and a second with more focus on the player character.
Feedback from Arrowhead Game Studio:
'We really like what we see. It has a clean look, with in general high quality level throughout. We really like your option 1 solution as it puts the character more in focus... it's a very modern design! Your breakdown was good, specifically bringing up the issues you had with the old UI, and the wireframe concepts highlighted the width you explored.' - Wessel Haytink, Talent Acquisition Partner
